The Srebrenica massacre was a very sad event during the Bosnian War. It took place in July 1995 in a town called Srebrenica. This town is located in Bosnia and Herzegovina. During this time, different groups were fighting for control of the land. This event is now known as a genocide. A genocide is a crime where people try to destroy a whole group of people.

To understand how this happened, we must look at the years before 1995. In the early 1990s, the country of Yugoslavia began to break apart. Different groups wanted to create their own independent lands. In Srebrenica, many Bosniak Muslims lived alongside Bosnian Serbs. As fighting grew, Serb forces surrounded the town to take control. The town became an enclave, which is a small area surrounded by other land.

Because the town was surrounded, life became very hard for the people. There was not enough food, medicine, or clean water. The United Nations tried to help by declaring Srebrenica a "safe area." They sent 370 Dutch soldiers to protect the people living there. However, the soldiers were lightly armed and could not stop the army. The Bosnian Serb Army, led by Ratko Mladić, eventually captured the town.

After the town was captured, many terrible things happened. More than 8,000 Bosniak Muslim men and boys were killed. Between 25,000 and 30,000 women and children were also forced to leave their homes. A list of the missing or killed people includes 8,372 names. Most of those killed were civilians, which means they were not soldiers.

Today, the world remembers what happened in Srebrenica to help prevent it from happening again. Courts like the International Court of Justice ruled that this was a genocide. In 2024, the United Nations named July 11 as a special day of reflection. People visit memorial sites to honor those who were lost. These sites help us remember the importance of peace and fairness for everyone.
