This war happened as the larger country of Yugoslavia was breaking apart. Bosnia was a place where many different groups lived together. In 1991, most people were Bosniaks, Serbs, or Croats.

These groups had different ideas about how the land should be ruled. This led to a lot of tension and fighting.

The conflict began after a vote for independence in early 1992.

Many Bosniaks and Croats wanted Bosnia to be its own country. However, many Bosnian Serbs did not want this to happen. They rejected the vote and wanted to stay connected to Serbia. This disagreement turned into a full-scale war by April 1992. Different armies began to fight for control of the land. The fighting was very intense and lasted for three long years.

During the war, many things happened that changed the country forever.

Some cities, like Sarajevo, faced long periods of being surrounded by enemy forces. There was also a lot of fighting between Croats and Bosniaks in 1993. The war included many hard things like the use of heavy weapons against towns. It also included ethnic cleansing, which means forcing groups of people to leave their homes. These events caused many people to suffer deeply.

There were many specific and sad moments during this time.

In July 1995, a terrible event called a genocide happened in Srebrenica. Serb forces killed over 8,000 Bosniak men and boys there. This is the only event in Europe recognized as a genocide since World War II. Experts believe over 100,000 people died during the whole war. Also, about 2.2 million people had to leave their homes to find safety. Many women also faced terrible violence during the fighting.

Peace finally came through a special agreement in the United States.

Leaders met in Dayton, Ohio, to talk about how to stop the fighting. They signed the Dayton Accords on November 21, 1995. This agreement helped end the war and created a new way to organize the country. After the war, special courts were set up to look at what happened. By 2008, these courts had convicted many people for war crimes. This helped the world understand the truth about the conflict.
