The Rohingya are a Muslim group living in Myanmar.

They have a unique language and culture. Some people believe they are descendants of Arab traders. Others say they have lived in the Rakhine State for many centuries. For a long time, they have faced very hard lives. In 1982, a new law in Myanmar denied them citizenship. This meant the government did not see them as citizens. They could not travel freely or go to school easily. They also lost much of their farmland to others.

Since the 1970s, the Rohingya have faced regular unfair treatment. The military and some nationalist groups have targeted them. In late 2016, the Myanmar military began a major crackdown. This happened in the Rakhine State in the northwest. This was the first phase of a larger crisis. Later, in August 2017, a second phase of violence began. This second wave followed attacks by a group called the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army. Since 2024, another group called the Arakan Army has also been accused of abuses.

Many world groups call these events a genocide. A genocide is when a group is targeted for harm. The United Nations and other groups found evidence of many crimes. These included killings and the burning of villages, businesses, and schools.

In one month in 2017, at least 6,700 Rohingya were killed. A study in 2018 estimated that 25,000 people were killed. It also estimated that 18,000 women and girls faced violence. Many more people were beaten or hurt by fire. The Myanmar government said these numbers were exaggerations.

This violence caused a huge refugee crisis in Asia. More than one million Rohingya had to flee their homes. Most people escaped to the country of Bangladesh. This created the largest refugee camp in the world.

Other people fled to India, Thailand, and Malaysia. This was the largest movement of people in Asia since the Vietnam War. As of September 2018, over 700,000 people had taken shelter in Bangladesh.

World leaders are now trying to help the Rohingya. The International Court of Justice ordered Myanmar to stop the violence. They also said Myanmar must keep evidence of past attacks. In 2022, the UN visited the refugee camps in Bangladesh.

Leaders want the Rohingya to be able to return home. However, the UN says this must be done in a safe way. The Rohingya must also be part of the decisions about their own future.
