He served as the president of Serbia from 1989 to 1997. Later, he led the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia until the year 2000. His leadership was a very important part of modern history. He played a major role during the Yugoslav Wars. This was a time of great conflict in the region. His actions changed how many people lived in those lands.

His path to power began with his studies and early jobs. He studied law at the University of Belgrade. While there, he joined a group for young socialists. He worked as an advisor to the mayor of Belgrade. Later, he became the chairman of large companies. One of his biggest jobs was running Beobanka, a large bank. These roles helped him meet important people like Ivan Stambolić. These connections were very helpful for his future career.

In the late 1980s, Milošević rose to lead the country. He gained support by speaking about the rights of Serbs in Kosovo. He promised to protect them from unfair treatment. In 1987, he spoke to a large crowd at Kosovo Polje. This event became very famous in Serbian politics. He used this momentum to take control of the Serbian party. By 1989, he was elected president of the Socialist Republic of Serbia. He then led a movement to change the country's rules.

His time as a leader brought many difficult challenges. During his presidency, there were many protests against his government. Large numbers of people left the Yugoslav People's Army. Many people also left Serbia to live in other places. In 1999, while NATO was bombing Yugoslavia, things became even harder. The United Nations set up a special court called the ICTY. This court charged him with war crimes from several different wars. These included the Bosnian War and the Kosovo War.
