He lived much of his life in France. His music blended many different styles together. These included rock, electronic, punk, and raï. Raï is a type of indigenous pop music from Algeria. Taha used his art to express political ideas. He often sang about the lives of immigrants. He also used music to protest against racism and unfairness. His work helped bridge different cultural worlds through sound.

Creating Taha's unique sound involved mixing many specific elements. He combined traditional North African instruments with modern technology. He often used the oud, which is a string instrument. He also played the mandole. The mandole is a mixture of the oud and European fretted instruments.

For rhythm, he used the darbuka, which is a drum instrument. He added programmed percussion and digital samples to his tracks. This created a sharp and driving sound. He also possessed a wide vocal facility that worked across many styles.

Taha's musical journey began in Algeria during a time of change. He was born in 1958 in Sig, or possibly in Oran.

Oran is a seaside city known as the birthplace of raï. In 1968, he moved to France with his parents. They settled near the city of Lyon. Taha worked many difficult day jobs to survive. He worked at a central heating plant and as a house painter. He even worked as an encyclopedia salesman. At night, he worked as a club DJ playing many genres.

In 1982, Taha formed the rock band Carte de Séjour. The name means "Green Card" or "Residence Permit." He was the lead vocalist for this Arab-language group. The band faced many challenges in their early years. Some record stores refused to stock their music. Taha sang in both French and Arabic. One of his early songs, "Douce France," was a protest song. It was a version of a patriotic French song. Because it was seen as an act of protest, it was banned from French radio.

Taha later began a successful solo career in Paris. He worked with many talented musicians during this time. The British guitarist Steve Hillage was a major collaborator. Hillage helped produce nine of Taha's solo albums between 1993 and 2006.

Taha's music reached a global audience through many different ways.

His solo work achieved significant milestones and recognition. His bestseller album was titled Diwân. This album featured remakes of songs from Arab traditions. He used the oud alongside contemporary beats and guitar work. In 2001, he released the album Made in Medina. This album combined Algerian roots with techno and pop. Taha noticed connections between different musical cultures. He saw similarities between the drum patterns in Louisiana Zydeco and raï music. He noted that both New Orleans and Algiers were former French colonies.

Today, Taha's musical legacy continues through various media. His songs have been featured in several major films. The song "Barra Barra" appeared in the movie Black Hawk Down. His song "Ya Rayah" was used in the film Something New. His music has even appeared in video game trailers. For example, his work was in the trailer for Far Cry 2. Taha's life showed that music can be a powerful tool for social change. He remained a prominent figure in the global music scene until his death in 2018.
