Manu Chao is a highly influential French-Spanish musician known for his multilingual performances. He was born José Manuel Tomás Arturo Chao Ortega on June 21, 1961. His music is a global tapestry of sound. He sings in French, Spanish, English, and Italian. He also uses Arabic, Catalan, Galician, Portuguese, and Greek.

This ability to bridge languages allows his work to reach diverse audiences worldwide.

Chao's musical identity is deeply rooted in his family history and early surroundings. His parents, Ramón Chao and Felisa Ortega, emigrated to Paris to escape the dictatorship of Francisco Franco in Spain. This move shaped Manu's upbringing in the outskirts of Paris. He grew up surrounded by artists and intellectuals. These early experiences served as a primary inspiration for his later songwriting. He was also an early fan of the Cuban singer-pianist Bola de Nieve.

His professional career began with several experimental groups in the mid-1980s. He first played in a Spanish/English rockabilly group called Hot Pants. He then formed Los Carayos to blend punk and rockabilly with the Parisian alternative scene. In 1987, he co-founded the band Mano Negra with his brother Antoine Chao and cousin Santiago Casariego.

The band initially performed in the Paris subway to earn a living. This environment acted as a musical school. The eclectic crowds in the subway forced the band to master many different styles to please diverse listeners.

Mano Negra achieved significant success, particularly in Europe. Their music featured a lively, energetic rhythm known as patchanka. This term is derived from pachanga, a colloquial word for a party. The band even toured South America via a ship and toured Colombia using a retired train called the "Ice Express."

However, internal rifts among the members led to the group's disbandment in 1995. Following this, Chao moved to Madrid to begin a new chapter as a solo artist.

As a solo artist, Chao formed the Radio Bemba Sound System. This group included musicians from Mexico, Brazil, and Argentina. They aimed to replicate the authentic sounds of street music and international bar scenes.

Chao traveled through South and Central America to record these sounds. This process resulted in the 1998 album Clandestino. The album was a massive success, selling over 5 million copies. It also won the Best World Music Album award at the 1999 Victoires de la Musique.

Chao utilizes a unique recording method that defines his modern sound. He often works from a mobile "Clandestine Studio," which is actually a small IBM ThinkPad laptop. He uses this device to record spoken-word samples from radio stations, films, and even Madrid Metro announcements.

His style, which he calls música mestiza, is a musical patchwork. It incorporates elements of rap, flamenco, salsa, reggae, ska, and Algerian raï. He also frequently reuses lyrics and melodies from older songs to create new compositions.

His influence extends far beyond his own albums. Chao has produced works for other artists, such as the album Dimanche à Bamako for Amadou & Mariam. His songwriting has also earned prestigious honors, including a Goya Award for Best Original Song.

His music has been covered by famous singers like Robbie Williams and Lily Allen. Through his blend of genres and languages, Manu Chao remains a central figure in the global music landscape.
