Qualitative research

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Qualitative research is a special way to study the world. It does not focus on using many numbers. Instead, it looks at descriptive data to understand people. Researchers want to learn about social reality. They look at attitudes, beliefs, and motivations. This helps them see what people think and feel. It is a great way to explore complex ideas.

There are many ways to collect this information. Researchers might use in-depth interviews to talk to people. They can also use focus groups to talk to a whole group at once. Some people use field observations to watch how things happen. This is called participant observation. An ethnographer might join a culture to understand it better. They might even use books, videos, or art as data.

This kind of research has many deep roots. It is shaped by different branches of philosophy. Some ideas come from phenomenology, which studies how people experience things. Other ideas come from social constructionism and symbolic interactionism. Many scholars have studied how these ideas change over time. People like Alfred Schütz and Harold Garfinkel helped shape these views. Different thinkers have different ways of looking at the world.

Researchers use many tools to find patterns in their data. One method is called coding. Coding means finding meaningful ideas in the notes. They might use thematic analysis to find patterns of meaning. Some use content analysis to study written or spoken words. They can even use computer programs like NVivo to help. These programs make it easier to store and find codes. This helps researchers work more efficiently.

Qualitative research is used in many different jobs. You can find it in sociology and psychology. It is also used in political science and social work. Even software engineers and teachers use it. Sometimes, researchers combine it with math-based research. This is called using mixed methods. Using both ways can help a study become even stronger. It allows researchers to see the full picture of a topic.
