Participant observation

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Participant observation is a special way to study people. Researchers use this method to learn about how groups live. It is used in many fields like anthropology and sociology. Some people study religious groups or youth groups. Others study people at their jobs. The goal is to get very close to a group. This helps them understand how people act in their own world.

This method works in several steps. First, a researcher must build rapport. This means they try to make friends and be accepted. Next, they must immerse themselves in the field. This means they live like the local people do. They might learn to "walk the walk" and "talk the talk." Then, they record what they see in field notes. They might also use journals to write about their own feelings. Finally, they look for patterns in what they learned.

People have used this idea for a very long time. In the year 1800, Joseph Marie suggested learning a language to know people. Later, Frank Hamilton Cushing studied the Zuni people in the late 1800s. The term "participant observation" was named in 1924 by Eduard C. Lindeman. He wrote about it in his 1925 book. Many famous scholars later made the method popular. These included Bronisław Malinowski and Margaret Mead.

There are different ways to join a group. A researcher might be a passive participant. This means they are just a bystander watching. They might also be an active participant. This person tries to learn all the group's skills. Some researchers even become complete participants. This means they are already members of the group. However, being too close can make it hard to stay neutral. Researchers must be careful not to lose their objective view.

This way of studying helps find hidden truths. It can show the difference between what people say and what they do. A survey might only show what people think they should do. But living with a group shows how they actually behave. Some scientists even use cameras to study people visually. This is called visual anthropology. Even though it is a hard job, it helps us understand the world.
