Robert Ezra Park was a very important American sociologist. A sociologist is someone who studies how people live in groups. He was a pioneer in this field of study. He changed sociology from just thinking about ideas to actually studying human behavior. He wanted to see how people act in real life. He is famous for studying how cities work and how different races live together.

Park used special ways to learn about the world. He liked a method called participant observation. This means a researcher joins in on what is happening to learn more. He also studied something called human ecology. This is the study of how humans relate to their natural and built environments. He looked at how people move to new places and how they join new cultures. He wanted to see how individuals learn to work together in a society.

Park's journey began in a small town in Minnesota. He was born in Pennsylvania in 1864 but grew up in Red Wing. As a young man, he worked as a news reporter. He worked in cities like Detroit, Denver, and New York City. Being a reporter helped him see the daily routines of many people. He even once gave directions to the famous bandit Jesse James. This early work in news shaped how he studied society later.

He spent many years learning at great schools. He studied at the University of Michigan and earned a degree there in 1887. Later, he earned a Master of Arts from Harvard University in 1899. He even went to Germany to study with a man named Georg Simmel. In 1904, he earned a Doctor of Philosophy from Heidelberg University. He also worked with the leader Booker T. Washington at the Tuskegee Institute. From 1914 to 1933, he taught at the University of Chicago.

Park left a huge mark on how we understand the world. At the University of Chicago, he helped start the Chicago School of sociology. This group used the big city as a place to do research. He also taught a very important course about Black Americans. This was one of the first classes like this at a white college. He served as the president of the American Sociological Association in 1925. Even after he retired, he continued to teach at Fisk University until 1944.
