He was born on January 1, 1864, in Xiangtan, Hunan. His family were peasants, and he grew up with many brothers and sisters. Because of illness, he could not stay in school for very long. He worked as a carpenter for a time. However, his interest in art was sparked by a book called the Manual of the Mustard Seed Garden. This book helped him learn to paint animals and insects on his own.

Qi used different ways to apply ink to paper. He first learned gongbi, a style using very fine brushwork and tiny details. Later, he became famous for xieyi, which means "sketching thoughts." This style is much more free and expressive. He believed paintings should be something between being exactly like a real object and not being like it at all. He often painted things people could recognize, like shrimp, birds, mice, and even vegetables. He also mastered calligraphy and the art of seal carving. He even called himself "the rich man of three hundred stone seals."

As Qi grew older, he looked for new ideas through travel. After he turned 40, he visited many beautiful spots across China. He met mentors like Wu Changshuo, who inspired much of his work. He also became close to Chen Shizeng while living in Beijing after 1917.

These connections helped him grow from a self-taught artist into a master. By his mid-fifties, he was considered a mature painter with very sharp lines. He moved from painting wildlife to painting many different kinds of plants.

Qi lived through many big changes in China. He stayed true to his own values even during harsh political times. In 1953, he was elected president of the China Artists Association.

He was even an honorary Chairman of the National Artists Association. Some of his work, like his paintings of farm tools, matched the spirit of the time. Mao Zedong even collected some of his work. Qi lived a long life and died in Beijing in 1957 at the age of 93.

Today, people all over the world value Qi's art. He is estimated to have made between 8,000 and 15,000 different works. About 3,000 of these are kept in museums. His paintings are very famous in art auctions. In 2017, his Twelve Landscape Screens sold for $140.8 million in Beijing. This helped him join the "$100 Million Club" of very expensive art. His children and grandchildren also continue his family tradition of painting.
