Pyxis

space Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Pyxis is a small constellation in the southern sky.

Its name comes from the Latin term Pyxis Nautica. This means a mariner's compass. A compass is a tool that helps sailors find their way. Pyxis is one of the 88 modern constellations. It covers about 220.8 square degrees of the sky. This is about 0.535% of the entire sky. You can see it best in the evening during February and March.

Many stars live within the borders of Pyxis. The three brightest stars are Alpha, Beta, and Gamma Pyxidis. They form a rough line in the sky. Alpha Pyxidis is the brightest star in the group. It is a blue-white star located 880 light-years away. This star is 22,000 times as luminous as our Sun.

Another star, T Pyxidis, is a recurrent nova. This means it flares up every few decades. It happens because a white dwarf pulls material from a companion star. This process makes the star brighten to a magnitude of 7.

People have studied these stars for a long time. Nicolas-Louis de Lacaille first described the constellation in 1752. He was a French astronomer. He stayed at the Cape of Good Hope for two years. During that time, he cataloged almost 10,000 southern stars. He named the constellation la Boussole in French. Later, he used the Latin name on his 1763 chart.

In the 1800s, John Herschel tried to rename it Malus. This name meant a ship's mast, but the name did not stick.

There are many interesting objects in this region. Scientists have found three star systems with confirmed exoplanets. One is a hot Jupiter named HD 73256 b. This large planet orbits its star every 2.55 days.

There is also the Pyxis globular cluster. This is a huge group of old stars. It is about 130,000 light-years away in the galactic halo. This cluster is about 13.3 billion years old. Some think it might have escaped from the Large Magellanic Cloud.

Pyxis is connected to much larger stories in space. It sits near the stars of the old constellation Argo Navis. That constellation was the ship of Jason and the Argonauts. Parts of that ship became new constellations like Carina and Vela.

Pyxis also lies on the plane of the Milky Way. This is the large disk of our galaxy. Looking at Pyxis is like looking at a small piece of a giant cosmic map. It helps us understand how stars and planets work together.
