It is a wonder of the natural world.

Many things worked together to build this arch. First, large glaciers moved through the entire valley. When the ice age ended, the ice began to melt. The retreating ice left behind huge piles of rock debris. At the same time, hot springs flowed nearby. This water is very rich in minerals. These minerals can turn small objects into stone. The minerals turned the rock piles into one solid mass. Later, a powerful river formed during a very wet time. The river cut through the lower layers of debris. This created the large opening we see now.

Many interesting people have visited this site. Charles Darwin visited the bridge in March 1835. He made drawings of the bridge and its stalactites. In the early 20th century, the area changed again. A large monastery and thermal resort were built there. People used the hot springs to treat certain illnesses.

Tourists even arrived by train to visit the resort. This was part of the Transandine Railway. The tracks once led into Chile through a long tunnel.

The area has a very rare climate. It is a warm-summer mediterranean continental climate. This means it has dry summers and snowy winters. This type of weather is rare in the Southern Hemisphere. The location helps create this special weather. It is far from the nearest ocean. It is also in a leeward position in the Andes. The high elevation keeps temperatures much lower than nearby areas.

The local plants look like they belong in a cold, dry place.

You can still explore the history of this place today. The old railway station is no longer used for trains. Instead, it is now a museum called "Museo del Andinista." A group of climbers from Rosario started this museum. It shows the cultural history of the mountain area. The museum is open to the public during the summer.

The site is also near the trails for climbing Aconcagua. That is the highest mountain in the western hemisphere.
