Propylene carbonate, often called PC, is a clear and odorless liquid.

It is an organic compound with the chemical formula C4H6O3. Scientists classify it as a cyclic carbonate ester. This means it is a specific type of molecule derived from propylene glycol. It is a very important tool in chemistry because it acts as a polar, aprotic solvent. A solvent is a substance that can dissolve other materials. Being polar means it has a strong electrical charge distribution. This makes it useful for many different industrial tasks.

Creating propylene carbonate involves specific chemical processes. Most organic carbonates are produced using a gas called phosgene. However, propylene carbonate is an exception to this common method. One primary way to make it is through the carbonation of epoxides. Specifically, scientists react propylene oxide with carbon dioxide to create the compound.

Another method involves a reaction between urea and propylene glycol. This second process requires zinc acetate to help the reaction happen. Using 1,2-propanediol with phosgene is also possible, but it is a complex process. That method often produces many other unwanted products alongside the propylene carbonate.

One of the most important features of PC is its high molecular dipole moment. This measurement is 4.9 D, which describes its electrical polarity. This is much higher than other common solvents. For example, acetone has a dipole moment of 2.91 D. Ethyl acetate is even lower at 1.78 D. Because of this high polarity, PC is excellent at dissolving salts. Scientists can use the electrolysis of salts dissolved in PC to obtain alkali metals. These include metals like potassium and sodium. This ability to handle charged particles makes it a powerful chemical tool.

Propylene carbonate is also very useful in the field of energy storage. It has a high relative permittivity, also known as a dielectric constant. The dielectric constant for PC is 64. This high number means it can hold an electric charge very effectively. Because of this, it is used as a component in electrolytes for lithium batteries. In these batteries, it is usually mixed with a low-viscosity solvent like dimethoxyethane.

The high polarity of PC allows it to create a solvation shell. This shell is a layer of molecules that surrounds lithium ions. This shell helps the ions move, creating a conductive electrolyte. However, PC cannot be used in lithium-ion batteries. This is because the liquid has a destructive effect on graphite.

History shows how this chemical helped improve natural gas processing. In the 1950s, the El Paso Natural Gas Company and Fluor Corporation developed a use for it. They used propylene carbonate to remove carbon dioxide from natural gas and synthesis gas. This process only works when hydrogen sulfide is not present. This specific application was used at the Terrell County Gas Plant in West Texas.

That facility is currently owned by Occidental Petroleum. This historical development shows how specific chemical properties solve industrial problems.

Beyond energy and gas, PC has many everyday uses. It is used as a plasticizer, which helps make materials more flexible. You might find it in various adhesives and paint strippers. It is also a common ingredient in many cosmetic products. In specialized science, it is used in electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. In that setting, it is added to solutions with low surface tension. This helps increase the charging of the analyzed material. It can also be used in Grignard reactions to create tertiary alcohols.

Safety is an important part of understanding this substance. In the United States, propylene carbonate is not regulated as a volatile organic compound (VOC). This is because it does not contribute significantly to the formation of smog. It is also not known or suspected to cause cancer. Clinical studies have looked at how it affects the human body. When used in cosmetic preparations, it does not cause skin irritation or sensitization. However, using the liquid undiluted can cause moderate skin irritation.

Studies on rats showed no significant toxic effects from vapors or the liquid. This makes it a relatively stable and manageable chemical for many uses.
