Propylene carbonate is a clear liquid. It has no smell.

Scientists call it a solvent. A solvent is a liquid that can dissolve other things. This liquid is very good at this job. It has a high dipole moment. This means it has a strong pull on other tiny parts.

Because of this pull, it helps in lithium batteries. It works as an electrolyte. An electrolyte is a substance that helps electricity flow. It helps move lithium ions through the battery. However, it is not used in lithium-ion batteries. This is because it can hurt graphite. Graphite is a material used in those batteries.

People also use this liquid in many other ways. It is found in some glue and paint strippers. You can find it in cosmetics, like makeup. It can also help clean natural gas. In the 1950s, companies used it to remove CO2 from gas. In the US, it is not a volatile organic compound. This means it does not help make smog. It is also not known to cause cancer.
