Propylene carbonate is a clear liquid with no smell.

Scientists call it an organic compound. It has the chemical formula C4H6O3. This liquid is a special kind of solvent. A solvent is a substance that can dissolve other things. It is also a cyclic carbonate ester. This means it comes from propylene glycol. Most people use it as a racemic mixture. This is a way of using a specific mix of molecules. It is a very useful tool in science and industry.

There are a few ways to make this liquid. One way is to use a thing called propylene oxide. Scientists add carbon dioxide to it to make the carbonate. Another way uses urea and propylene glycol. This second way needs zinc acetate to work. Some other carbonates are made using a gas called phosgene. However, propylene carbonate is an exception to that rule. It uses different steps to form its unique structure.

This liquid is very good at moving electricity. It has a high dielectric constant of 64. This means it can hold an electric charge well. Because of this, it works as an electrolyte. An electrolyte is a substance that helps electricity flow. It helps move lithium ions by creating a solvation shell. This shell is like a protective layer around the ions.

It is used in some lithium batteries. But, it is not used in lithium-ion batteries. This is because it can damage graphite.

Many different industries use propylene carbonate today. It is found in some glues and paint strippers. You can also find it in many cosmetics. It is used as a plasticizer to make things flexible. In the 1950s, companies used it to clean natural gas. The El Paso Natural Gas Company and Fluor Corporation developed this. They used it at the Terrell County Gas Plant in West Texas.

That plant is now owned by Occidental Petroleum.

Using this liquid is generally safe for people. In the US, it is not a volatile organic compound. This means it does not help create smog. It is also not known to cause cancer. Clinical studies show it does not irritate skin in cosmetics. However, it can cause moderate irritation if it is undiluted. This means it has not been mixed with other things yet.

It is a helpful and stable part of modern chemistry.
