Polycarbonate is a special group of strong plastics. Scientists call these materials thermoplastic polymers. This means they are made of long, repeating chains of molecules.

These plastics contain carbonate groups in their chemical structures. Because of this, they are very tough and hard to break. Some types are also optically transparent, which means they are very clear.

This clarity allows light to pass through easily. Polycarbonate is often used in engineering because it is easy to mold and shape. It sits in a helpful middle ground between common plastics and heavy-duty engineering plastics.

There are two main ways to make this material. The first way is called the phosgene route. In this process, a substance called bisphenol A, or BPA, reacts with phosgene.

First, the BPA is treated with sodium hydroxide. This creates a substance called diphenoxide. When the diphenoxide reacts with phosgene, it forms the plastic. Another way to make it is the transesterification route. This uses BPA and diphenyl carbonate instead. Both ways help create the long molecular chains that make the plastic strong.

Making polycarbonate is a huge global task. Factories produce about one billion kilograms of it every year.

Scientists have tested many different ingredients to make it. For example, they use cyclohexane to stop the plastic from forming crystals. They also use tetrabromobisphenol A to help the plastic resist fire. Some researchers are even developing a replacement for BPA called tetramethylcyclobutanediol. These small changes help make the plastic work better for different jobs.

Polycarbonate has many unique physical properties. It is much tougher than acrylic, which is another clear plastic.

While it can take a big hit, it can also get scratched easily. Because of this, people often add a hard coating to lenses. It stays clear and strong even in extreme temperatures. It also has a glass transition temperature of about 147 °C. This means it starts to soften gradually once it gets that hot. At high heat, it becomes easy to shape into new forms.

You can find polycarbonate in many things you see every day. It is used to make DVDs, Blu-ray discs, and compact discs.

In construction, it makes roofs for greenhouses and walls to block sound. It is also very important for safety. You might wear polycarbonate goggles to protect your eyes in a lab.

It is even used for the large cockpit canopy on F-22 Raptor fighter jets.

This makes it a vital material for both fun and serious work.
