Polyol

physical science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

A polyol is a special kind of organic compound. It is defined by having many hydroxyl groups. A hydroxyl group is a part made of oxygen and hydrogen.

Scientists group these molecules by how many groups they hold. A polyol with two groups is called a diol. One with three groups is a triol. A polyol with four groups is a tetrol.

Because they have these groups, polyols are often thick and viscous at room temperature. This happens because of a thing called hydrogen bonding.

These molecules work in many different ways to create new materials. Some polyols act as chain extenders to make molecules bigger. They can also act as crosslinking agents.

One common way they work is by reacting with diisocyanates. This process creates a material called polyurethane. This material can be a soft foam or a hard coating. Different types of polyols change how the final product feels or works. For example, caprolactone-based polyols make polyurethanes that resist water damage well.

Many people use polyols in the foods they eat every day. Sugar alcohols are a group of low molecular weight polyols. They are made by adding hydrogen to sugars.

Common examples include maltitol, sorbitol, xylitol, erythritol, and isomalt. These are used in food because they have fewer calories than regular sugar. They are also less sweet. People put them in chewing gum to help prevent tooth decay. This is because mouth bacteria cannot break them down easily.

Polyols are also very important in big industries. About 200,000 tons of alkyd resins are made every year. These resins are used in many oil-based paints. To make these, workers use polyols like glycerol, trimethylolpropane, and pentaerythritol.

Some polyols are even used to make coatings for cars. These must be able to handle ultraviolet light from the sun. Other polyols are used to make the foam inside your mattress or your freezer. They help keep things soft or keep things cold.

We can find polyols in nature and from recycled items. Some are made from renewable plant materials. For instance, neem oil, castor oil, and cottonseed oil can be used.

Even seed oil can be used to make polyester polyols. Some polyols are even made from recycled plastic like PET. This shows how these molecules link to both our food and our technology. They help build the world around us in many ways.
