A polyol is a type of molecule. It has many hydroxyl groups. These are small parts that hold oxygen and hydrogen.

Scientists group them by how many parts they have. A polyol with two groups is a diol. One with three is a triol. A polyol with four is a tetrol.

Some polyols are used in food. These are called sugar alcohols. They are less sweet than regular sugar. They have fewer calories, too. People put them in chewing gum. This is because mouth germs cannot eat them. This helps prevent tooth decay.

Other polyols help make many things we use. They can make polyurethane foam. This foam goes in mattresses and chairs. It also makes insulation for freezers. Some polyols help make paint and coatings. Some of these come from plants. We can use oils from seeds to make them. This is a way to use renewable parts.
