It lived during the Paleogene period. This was a time between the Late Paleocene and Early Eocene. These birds lived in North America and even in Mongolia. They liked to live near shallow lakes. Scientists call them stem anseriforms. This means they were early members of the group that includes ducks.

This bird had a very interesting way of living. It had long legs and a long neck. At first, people thought it was a flamingo. Then, they saw its skull and bill. The bill was broad and flat. This helped the bird filter food from the water. It ate small plants and tiny animals. This is just like how dabbling ducks eat today.

Many fossils tell us how these birds lived together. We found many complete skeletons in the Green River Formation. These fossils show the birds nested in colonies. A colony is a large group of animals living in one place. Some birds may have died from volcanoes. Others might have died from botulism. This is a sickness that affects many water birds today.

Researchers have found different types of Presbyornis in many places. One type is called P. pervetus. We also found P. recurvirostra in the Colton Formation. This was found near Ephraim, Utah. Another type is P. isoni. It lived in the Aquia Formation in Maryland. This bird was much larger than P. pervetus. We found its arm bone and finger bones there.

Finding these fossils helps us see how birds changed. Presbyornis is related to modern screamers. It is not a flamingo or a simple duck. It was part of an extinct group of anseriforms. We also found fossils on Ellesmere Island. These were found in the Margaret Formation. These old bones act like a map of the past. They show us how life worked millions of years ago.
