At first, people thought it was a flamingo. It had a long neck and long legs. But its skull and bill looked like a duck. We call these birds anseriforms. This means they are part of the group that includes ducks.

Presbyornis had a wide, flat bill. It used this to filter food from the water. It ate small plants and tiny animals. It lived in colonies. A colony is a large group of animals living together.

Many fossils show these birds lived in big groups. Some birds may have died from volcanoes. Others may have died from botulism. Botulism is a type of sickness.

One kind, P. isoni, was very big. It was much larger than P. pervetus. We found its wing and finger bones. We also found its arm bone. Scientists found fossils in Utah and Maryland too.
