Pratinas was a famous poet in ancient Greece. He lived during the early fifth century BCE. He was a native of Phlius in the Peloponnese. People thought his work helped make drama perfect. He was a very skilled writer of many things. He wrote serious tragedies and funny plays. He also wrote songs for large groups to sing.

Pratinas is famous for a big change in theater. Before him, funny parts were mixed into serious plays. This could feel strange for the audience. The funny parts featured Satyrs, who were silly characters. These characters loved to dance and play. Pratinas gave these Satyrs their own separate stage. These were called satyr plays. This change let tragedy stay serious. It also let the funny stories be fun.

Pratinas lived a long time ago. He went to Athens to show his work. He competed against other famous writers. One was Aeschylus, who was also very well known. Pratinas was active around 500–499 BCE. This was during the 70th Olympiad. He was a Dorian by birth. His father was named Pyrrhonides or Encomius.

He was a very busy writer. One source called the Suda says he wrote fifty plays. Thirty-two of those were satyr plays. Another writer named Böckh had a different count. He thought Pratinas wrote twelve satyr plays. Pratinas also wrote songs called dithyrambs. He wrote choral odes called hyporchemata. These were songs meant for dancing.

Pratinas cared a lot about music and dance. He was called an orchestikos. This means he focused on choral dances. He even wrote about the sounds of music. He did not like loud flutes. He thought they drowned out the singers. He wanted to use different musical scales. His son, Aristias, was also a great writer. The people of Phlius even built a monument for him.
