Schlüter's political career involved many different roles and responsibilities. He first joined the Folketing, which is the Danish parliament, in 1964. He served as a member of this parliament until 1994. He also led his own party as Chairman of the Conservative People's Party. He held this leadership role from 1974 to 1977. He later returned as Chairman from 1981 to 1993. These roles helped him build the experience needed to lead the nation.

To become Prime Minister, Schlüter had to organize a specific type of government. In 1982, Prime Minister Anker Jørgensen was forced to resign. Schlüter responded by constructing a four-party coalition. A coalition is a group of different political parties working together. This partnership allowed him to take over as the successor. During his leadership, he received much international respect. In 1984, he was named the "Nordic Politician of the Year."

He also led the Danish Delegation to the Nordic Council. In 1978 and 1979, he served on the Council Presidium. He met many famous world leaders during his time in office. These included British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and French President François Mitterrand. He also met United States President Ronald Reagan.

His time as Prime Minister ended due to a specific legal inquiry. This event was known as the Tamil Case. The case involved asylum requests from Tamil refugees. These people had fled a civil war in Sri Lanka. The inquiry found that Schlüter had misinformed the Danish Parliament. Because of this, he retired from his position in 1993. After his retirement, he continued to serve in the European Parliament. He served there from 1994 to 1999. For the first three years, he was a vice-president of that body.

Schlüter remained involved in public life and new ideas for many years. In 2003, he acted as a special envoy for the Swedish Minister of Co-operation. His goal was to promote freedom of movement within Nordic countries. He worked to create proposals for the Nordic Council in October 2003. In 2004, he helped found a Danish free-market think tank called CEPOS. A think tank is an organization that researches and offers ideas on policy. He even gave the opening speech at the CEPOS reception in Copenhagen.

Schlüter lived a long life and received many honors. He was awarded the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Dannebrog. He also received the Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Order of the Polar Star. He passed away from natural causes on May 27, 2021. He was 92 years old at the time of his death. He died peacefully at the Bispebjerg Hospital in Copenhagen. Many leaders, including current Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, paid tribute to him. He was eventually laid to rest at the Holmen Church.
