Porto-Novo is the place where the national legislature sits. It is the second-largest city in the country.

The city has a tropical savanna climate. This means it is hot and humid. There are two wet seasons every year. The long wet season lasts from March to July. A shorter rain season happens in September and October. The city is near the Dahomey Gap. This makes the area much drier than other places near the equator. It is still less dry than cities like Accra or Lomé.

History shaped the city in many ways. The name Porto-Novo means "New Port" in Portuguese. A man named Eucaristo de Campos gave it this name in 1730. He wanted to show that a new port was being built. The city was once part of the Yoruba Oyo Empire. Later, the French took control of the area. By 1900, it became the capital of French Dahomey. The last king of Porto-Novo died in 1976.

Many different people live in Porto-Novo today. Most residents are from the Yoruba or Gun ethnic groups. Many people also come from neighboring Nigeria.

Culture is a big part of life in the city. Many Afro-Brazilians moved here after being freed in Brazil. They brought new foods and building styles with them.
