The history of Cotonou began a long time ago. In the early 1800s, it was just a small fishing village. It is thought that King Ghezo of Dahomey founded it in 1830. The name Cotonou means "by the river of death" in the Fon language. The town grew as a place for trading palm oil and cotton. Later, the French built a large harbour in 1908. This helped the city grow very quickly.
