It sits at the southwest corner of the country. The city is located on the Gulf of Guinea. Its western border touches the edge of Ghana's Volta Region. Lomé serves as the main center for government and industry. It is also the country's chief port for ships. Many goods like coffee and cocoa are sent from here.

Business and trade drive much of the city's life. The port allows the country to export many different items. These include cocoa, coffee, copra, and oil palm kernels. The city also has an oil refinery for industrial work. Many people work in a "popular economy" of small services. This includes many activities like repair and exchange. This informal sector is a vital way for people to earn money.
