Porcupines are large rodents with sharp quills.

These quills are actually modified hairs. They are made of a tough material called keratin. These spines help protect the animal from predators. A baby porcupine is called a porcupette.

When they are born, their quills are soft hair. The quills harden after a few days.

There are two main groups of porcupines. The Old World porcupines live in Africa and Asia. They are large and stay on the ground. They are strictly nocturnal, which means they are active at night. New World porcupines live in North and South America. Many of these can climb trees. Some species spend their whole lives in trees.

Porcupines have many ways to stay safe. They can raise their quills to look scary. They also clatter their teeth to warn enemies. If a predator gets too close, the porcupine may attack. It can run sideways or backwards into the enemy. This helps the quills stick into the predator. They cannot shoot their quills like arrows. They only release them through contact or by shaking. Porcupines are slow-moving animals. One porcupine named Cooper lived for over 32 years.
