Porcupines are large rodents with many sharp spines. These spines are actually called quills. They are modified hairs made of a tough material called keratin.

Quills help protect these animals from predators. This protection is a way of showing they are not good to eat. This strategy is called aposematism. A baby porcupine is called a porcupette. When they are born, their quills are just soft hair. The quills harden into sharp spines after a few days.

There are two main families of porcupines. The Old World porcupines belong to the family Hystricidae. They live in Italy, West and South Asia, and most of Africa. These animals are large and live on the ground. They are strictly nocturnal, which means they are active at night. The New World porcupines belong to the family Erethizontidae. They live in North and South America. Many of these species live in wooded areas. They are excellent climbers and some spend their whole lives in trees.

Porcupines have many ways to defend themselves. First, they can raise their quills to look scary. They might also clatter their teeth to warn enemies. This happens when their incisors vibrate against each other. They can also release an unpleasant scent from their skin. If these things do not work, they may attack. They run sideways or backwards into a predator. This makes the quills stick into the enemy. They cannot shoot their quills like arrows. They only release them through contact or by shaking.

Scientists have studied how these animals changed over time. The two families are not closely related to each other. They both developed spines through convergent evolution. This means they grew similar tools even though they are different. Some fossils of Old World porcupines, like Hystrix primigenia, are very old. They lived during the late Miocene and Pliocene periods. New World porcupines are often smaller than Old World ones. The North American porcupine can reach a certain length and weight.

Humans have a long history with porcupines. Some cultures use their quills to make beautiful textiles. In some places, people use them for food. In Southeast Asia, porcupines are a food source. In Kenya, they are sometimes called a delicacy. Some people in America even call them "quill-pig." Porcupines are slow-moving animals. One porcupine named Cooper lived for over 32 years. This is a record for a rodent. They live in many places like forests, deserts, and hillsides.
