Porcupinefish live in seas around the world.

These fish are often slow. They have many ways to stay safe. First, they can swallow water or air. This makes their bodies grow much rounder. They can become almost twice as tall. This helps because most predators have small mouths. Second, they have sharp spines. These spines stick out when the fish is big.

Porcupinefish have special teeth. Their teeth fuse into a shape like a parrot's beak. They use this beak to eat sea urchins and molluscs.

Some species are also poisonous. They have a toxin called tetrodotoxin in their organs. This poison comes from bacteria in their food. This toxin is very strong. It is 1,200 times more potent than cyanide.

Because of these defenses, few animals eat them. Adult fish are sometimes eaten by sharks or orcas. Young fish may be eaten by tuna or dolphins. In the Philippines, people eat them as a special food. They call them tagotongan there.
