life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Many fish are called rockfish. Some also go by names like rockcods. These fish belong to a group called Sebastinae. A man named Johann Jakob Kaup named them in 1873.

Rockfish have flat, thin bodies. Their heads often have ridges and spines. These fish have venom glands in their fins. This means their spines can sting. They have spines on their top and bottom fins. They also have spines on their pelvic fins.

Some species are very large. The shortraker rockfish is the biggest. Other species are quite small. The Sebastes koreanus is the smallest.

You can find rockfish in many oceans. They live in the Pacific, Indian, and Atlantic Oceans. Most live in the North Pacific. They live in salt water. They also live in brackish water. Brackish water is a mix of salt and fresh water. One large group is called Sebastes. This group has over 100 species. They are ovoviviparous. This means they give birth to live young.
