Many people know it by the brand name Teflon. A scientist named Roy Plunkett found it by accident in 1938. He was trying to make a new gas. Instead, he found a white, waxy solid inside a bottle.

This material is very slippery. It has a low coefficient of friction. This means it does not rub easily against other things.

Because it is slippery, it is great for non-stick pans.

It is also hydrophobic. This means water does not wet it. It stays dry and keeps things from sticking. PTFE is very strong and can handle heat well. It does not react with most chemicals. This makes it useful for pipes and containers. It is also used to wrap wires in computers and planes.
