A man named James Young Simpson showed how it worked on humans. But it could be very dangerous. Some people died if they took too much. A doctor named John Snow made an inhaler. An inhaler is a tool for breathing in medicine. This tool helped control the dose. This made it safer for patients.

Today, we use chloroform to make other things. It is a precursor, which means it is a starting material. We use it to make the non-stick part of pans. This part is called PTFE. It is also used to make R-22. R-22 is a chemical used in cooling tools. Chloroform is also a good solvent. A solvent is a liquid that can dissolve other things. It can dissolve many materials like rubber and wax.
