Sulfur hexafluoride is a special kind of gas. It has no color and no smell. It is also not toxic. This gas is very heavy. It is much denser than the air around us.

Because it is heavy, it can sink into low spots. This can be dangerous. It can push away the oxygen we need to breathe.

This gas helps the power industry. It works as a dielectric medium. This means it helps stop electricity from jumping where it should not go. It is used in big tools like switchgear. These tools help move electricity safely. It also helps make tiny parts for electronics.

Doctors use this gas in special ways too. They use tiny bubbles of it during eye surgery. These bubbles help fix parts of the eye.

This gas stays in the air for a very long time. It can stay for up to 3,200 years. Because of this, it is a strong greenhouse gas. It helps trap heat in our atmosphere. Scientists are looking for new ways to use other gases instead.
