Fluorosulfuric acid

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Fluorosulfuric acid is a very strong liquid. It is clear like water. Some samples look yellow. This color comes from tiny bits of other things. It is a superacid. This means it is stronger than 100% sulfuric acid. It is one of the strongest acids we can buy.

This acid can break down most organic compounds. These are things made of carbon. It can also change how some oils work. Scientists use it in labs to add fluorine. Fluorine is a special element.

Making this acid takes a reaction. This is a way that two things change into something new. People mix hydrogen fluoride and sulfur trioxide to make it. They can also use a hot liquid called oleum.

This liquid is very dangerous. It is highly toxic. It is also extremely corrosive. This means it can eat through things. If it touches water, it reacts very hard. It turns into hydrogen fluoride and sulfuric acid. You must be very careful with it.
