Ronald Gillespie and his team made it in the 1960s. The liquid is a mix of two parts. These parts are fluorosulfuric acid and antimony pentafluoride. It got its funny name at a party in 1966. A person put a wax candle in the acid. The acid dissolved the wax very fast.

This acid helps scientists study tiny parts called carbocations. These are parts of a molecule that lack electrons.

Magic acid can even change small gases. It can react with methane, which is a gas. It can also react with xenon and hydrogen.

This helps scientists see how atoms move and change.

Because it is so strong, it is also dangerous. It can cause bad burns to skin and eyes. People must wear masks and shields to stay safe. It is also toxic to life in the water.
