Magic acid is a very powerful liquid. Scientists call it a superacid. This means it is much stronger than common acids. For example, it is millions of times stronger than sulfuric acid.

This strength makes it very useful for science. It can change how molecules act. It can even pull parts away from things that are usually very stable. This makes it a special tool for studying chemistry.

This acid works by providing protons. A proton is a tiny part of an atom. Magic acid is a mix of two things. It uses fluorosulfuric acid and antimony pentafluoride. Most of the time, they are mixed in a one-to-one ratio. This mixture creates a system that can react with almost anything. It can even react with methane gas. It can also react with xenon and hydrogen.

Scientists first used the term superacid in 1927. James Bryant Conant found that perchloric acid was very strong. Later, Ronald Gillespie and his team developed magic acid in the 1960s. They wanted to study carbocations. These are tiny pieces of molecules that lack electrons. They are often very hard to see. The funny name came from a 1966 Christmas party. A lab member put a wax candle into the acid. The acid dissolved the candle very quickly.

Magic acid helps us see how atoms move. It can create special shapes called carbocations. Some of these are called nonclassical ions. These ions have bonds that involve more than two atoms at once.

This was a big discovery in science history. It helped solve a long debate about how molecules are built. Magic acid also helps speed up certain reactions. It can work with ozone to change alkanes. It can also work with hydroperoxides.

Working with such a strong acid requires great care. It is much stronger than the acids used in many schools. It can cause severe burns to the skin and eyes. It is also toxic to living things in the water. Scientists must wear special gear to stay safe. They use gloves and goggles. They also use face shields and respirators. This keeps the strong liquid away from their bodies.
