People use this acid to make many things. It helps make Teflon, which is a non-stick material. It also helps make some medicines, like Prozac. In the computer industry, it is used to clean silicon wafers. This is a thin slice of silicon used for parts. It can also etch glass. This means it can carve or frost the surface.

Scientists use the acid to study the Earth. It can dissolve rock samples. This helps them find fossils hidden inside the stone.

This liquid is very dangerous. It is a contact poison. It can soak into skin or eyes. It can even reach and hurt bones. This happens because it reacts with calcium in the body. It can be hard to feel the pain right away. This is because it interferes with how nerves work. Because it eats through glass, people store it in plastic containers. Carl Wilhelm Scheele first made this acid in 1771.
