Hydrofluoric acid

physical science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Hydrofluoric acid is a clear, colorless liquid. It is a mix of hydrogen fluoride and water. This substance is highly corrosive, which means it can eat through many materials.

It is also a very strong acid when it is concentrated. Many people use it to make important things like Teflon. This is the non-stick material used in many pans. It also helps make the medicine Prozac. It is a vital tool in modern science and industry.

This acid works in many different ways. In the computer industry, it cleans silicon wafers. It can also etch glass by turning silicon dioxide into gas or liquid.

This process can polish or frost the surface of the glass. Scientists also use it to study the Earth. They can dissolve powdered rock samples to study them. It even helps find fossils by dissolving the stone around them. This lets the organic fossils stay behind for study.

Learning about this acid started a long time ago. A man named Carl Wilhelm Scheele first prepared it in 1771. Today, we make it in large amounts using a mineral called fluorite. We mix the fluorite with concentrated sulfuric acid. This happens at a very hot temperature of about 265 degrees Celsius. It can also be found as a byproduct of making phosphoric acid. This comes from minerals like apatite and fluoroapatite.

There are many specific facts about how it behaves. A common concentration of the liquid is 49 percent. Some versions are even stronger, reaching 70 percent. Because it can eat through glass, it must be stored in plastic. These containers are often made of a material called PTFE. In oil refineries, it acts as a catalyst during a process called alkylation. This helps turn chemicals like isobutane into other products. This happens at mild temperatures between 0 and 30 degrees Celsius.

Even though it is useful, this acid is very dangerous. It is a powerful contact poison that can soak into skin or eyes.

It can even cause damage to bones by reacting with calcium. Sometimes, a person might not feel pain right away. This is because the acid interferes with how nerves work. This can be very tricky for doctors. People can use a gel called hexafluorine to treat these burns.
