Polygnotus was born in a place called Thasos. Later, the people of Athens adopted him as a citizen. He was a very kind man who cared for others. He did not paint just to earn money. Instead, he painted to show kindness to the Athenian people.

His paintings were very large and special.

He made large murals, which are big paintings on walls. These were made for public buildings where everyone could see them. One famous place was the Stoa Poikile. He painted the taking of Troy on those walls. He also painted the marriage of the daughters of Leucippus. Another important work was in a building at Delphi. This building was called the Lesche of the Knidians. It was built by the people of Cnidus.

Polygnotus had a very unique way of painting.

Before him, artists put people on a simple flat line. They left the space around them looking empty. Polygnotus did something much different and new. He placed his figures on many different levels. He used rocky land and clear water in his scenes. This helped his art look three-dimensional. This means the scenes looked like they had real depth. His figures were not crowded or overlapping. They stood in neat rows, one above another.

Many people wrote about his amazing skill.

A traveler named Pausanias wrote down details about his paintings. He described the figures one by one. The philosopher Aristotle said his art was very beautiful. He liked how Polygnotus drew individual figures. The painter Theophrastus called him the inventor of painting. A man named Quintilian said his works were worth looking at. He believed they were more than just old works. They were truly great pieces of art.

We can still see his influence in other art.

For example, a famous vase called the Niobid Krater exists. Scholars think this vase shows his special style. It uses complex views and thoughtful poses. His work changed how people saw the world through art. He showed that a painting could be a whole landscape. By using different heights, he made art feel alive. His ideas helped shape the history of painting forever.
