Polygnotus was a highly influential ancient Greek painter.

He was active during the middle of the 5th century BC. Many scholars of the Classical World viewed him as a pioneer. Some even considered him the inventor of the artform itself. He was the son of Aglaophon, who was also his teacher. Although he was born in Thasos, he became an Athenian citizen. This adoption allowed him to live and work in Athens.

Polygnotus is known for creating large-scale murals for public buildings.

Murals are large paintings applied directly to walls. He painted several important works for the Athenian people. One major project was at the Stoa Poikile. There, he depicted the taking of Troy. He also painted the marriage of the daughters of Leucippus in the Anacaeum. These works were displayed in spaces where the public could see them.

His approach to composition changed how artists used space.

Before his time, artists used a simple groundline. They placed figures on a flat line and left the surrounding area empty. Polygnotus broke this tradition by arranging figures on different levels. He placed them in landscapes featuring rocky land and transparent water. This technique allowed him to attempt three-dimensional scenes. It gave his work a sense of depth that was very new.

Another characteristic of his style was the arrangement of figures.

His figures were detached and rarely overlapped one another. He organized them into two or three rows. These rows were positioned one above the other. Interestingly, the figures in the back were not smaller or dimmer. This suggests his paintings followed a plan similar to contemporary sculptural reliefs. This method helped create a structured and orderly visual experience.

Historical records provide us with details about his most famous works. The traveler Pausanias recorded a careful, figure-by-figure description of his frescoes. These specific paintings were located in the Lesche of the Knidians. This building was erected at Delphi by the people of Cnidus. While the colors are gone, archaeologists have recovered the building's foundations. They use this evidence to try and reconstruct his original artistic vision.

Many ancient thinkers praised the quality of his art.

The philosopher Aristotle noted the beauty of his individual figures. He believed the art possessed an "ethical" and ideal character. Theophrastus famously called him the "inventor" of painting. Another scholar, Quintilian, stated that his works deserved inspection. He argued they were great because of their skill, not just their age. Even the poet Melanthius noted his charitable nature. It is said he did not paint for money, but for the people.

His artistic legacy can still be observed in later Greek works.

One notable example is the Niobid Krater, a vase from around 460-450 BC. Scholars believe this piece was influenced by the style of Polygnotus. The vase uses complex perspective and contemplative poses. This shows how his innovations in depth and character moved through the art world. His ability to move beyond flat lines helped define the future of visual storytelling.
