Nandalal Bose was a pioneer of modern Indian art. He was a central figure in a movement called Contextual Modernism. This movement sought to create a modern style rooted in Indian traditions. Bose was a student of the artist Abanindranath Tagore. He eventually developed a unique "Indian style" of painting. Many art critics consider his work to be among the most important modern paintings in India.

In 1976, the Government of India officially declared his works as "art treasures." This status was given because of their immense artistic and aesthetic value.

Bose used various methods to express his vision. He was deeply influenced by the ancient murals of the Ajanta Caves. His paintings often depicted scenes from Indian mythologies. He also focused on themes of women and the rhythms of village life.

One specific technique he used was the linocut print. This involves carving a design into linoleum to create a print. In 1930, he created a famous black and white linocut of Mahatma Gandhi. The image showed Gandhi walking with a staff to protest the British salt tax. This print became an iconic symbol for the non-violence movement.

Bose's career involved many leadership roles in art education. In 1921, he became the principal of Kala Bhavan. This was the College of Arts at Tagore's International University in Santiniketan. He was part of an international circle of artists and writers. This group included people like Okakura Kakuzō and William Rothenstein. They all sought to revive classical Indian culture through art. Bose also worked closely with his disciple, Rammanohar Sinha. Together, they decorated the original manuscript of the Constitution of India.

His early life shaped his creative interests. Bose was born on December 3, 1882, in Haveli Kharagpur, Bihar. His family originally came from the Hooghly District of West Bengal. His father, Purna Chandra Bose, worked for the Darbhanga Estate. His mother, Khetramoni Devi, was a housewife. She had a skill for making improvised toys and dolls for him. These early experiences helped Nandalal develop an interest in modeling images. He also enjoyed decorating Puja pandals, which are temporary structures for religious festivals.

Bose faced challenges while pursuing his passion. He moved to Calcutta in 1898 for high school. He wanted to study art, but his family did not initially give him permission. He attempted to study commerce at Presidency College in 1905. After several unsuccessful attempts at his studies, he finally persuaded his family. He then began studying at the Calcutta School of Art. This perseverance allowed him to join the Indian Society of Oriental Art. He was the first recipient of a scholarship from this society in 1907.

Throughout his life, Bose received many high honors. In 1954, he became the first Fellow of the Lalit Kala Akademi. This is India's National Academy of Art. That same year, he was awarded the Padma Vibhushan. The University of Calcutta gave him an honorary D.Litt. in 1957. He also received the title of 'Deshikottama' from Vishvabharati University.

His work was also recognized by the Archaeological Survey of India. He was named one of nine masters whose work is considered a national treasure.

His influence extends to many modern institutions and people. The National Gallery of Modern Art in Delhi holds 7,000 of his works. He was also asked by Jawaharlal Nehru to design important emblems. These included the symbols for the Bharat Ratna and the Padma Shri awards. Many of his students became famous artists themselves. These include names like Satyajit Ray and Benode Behari Mukherjee. Bose died of natural causes on April 16, 1966, in Santiniketan. His legacy remains a vital part of India's cultural identity.
