Polycotylids were a family of sea animals. They lived a long time ago. These animals are called plesiosaurs.

They first appeared during the Early Cretaceous period. Later, they lived in many places. They lived through the early Late Cretaceous too. Some species lived until the very end of that time.

These animals had a special look. They had short necks. They also had large, long heads. This made them look like pliosaurs. But scientists found they are different. They are part of a group called plesiosauroids. This means they are more like Leptocleididae. They are not as close to Elasmosauridae.

We can find their bones all over the world. They lived in New Zealand and Australia. They lived in Japan and Morocco. Some were found in the US and Canada. You can also find them in Eastern Europe and South America. They were very widespread in the old oceans.
