Polycotylidae were a special family of sea animals. They were part of a group called plesiosaurs. These creatures lived a very long time ago. They lived during a time called the Cretaceous.

This group of animals was very important in the ancient oceans. They were successful and lived in many different areas. Scientists study them to learn about life in the past.

These animals had a very distinct look. They had short necks and long, stretched-out heads. Because of this, they looked a lot like pliosaurs. However, science tells us they were actually different. They belong to a group called plesiosauroids.

This means they are closely related to Leptocleididae. They are more distantly related to Elasmosauridae.

We can track how they lived through time. Polycotylids first appeared during the Albian stage. This was part of the Early Cretaceous.

Later, they became very common and spread out. They were widespread during the early Late Cretaceous. Some species even lived into the Maastrichtian stage. This was the very final stage of the Cretaceous.

We find their remains in many places today. Their fossils have been found all over the world.

You can find them in New Zealand and Australia. They also lived in Japan and Morocco. Specimens are in the US and Canada. You can even find them in Eastern Europe and South America. This shows they lived in many different oceans.

Finding these fossils helps us connect the past to today. We use fossils to see how animals change.

One animal named Rarosaurus lived in the late Maastrichtian. Some scientists think it might be a crocodylomorph instead. Studying these bones helps us understand the tree of life. It shows how different groups of animals are related. We learn how the world worked millions of years ago.
