A political party is a large group of people working together. They coordinate candidates to compete in elections and help run a government. Most members share similar ideas about how a country should work. These ideas are often called an ideology. Parties can be very large organizations with many different parts. They usually have a leader who is in charge of activities. Executives also help with the hard jobs of organizing the group. Members might volunteer their time or donate money to help.

Parties work in many different ways to reach their goals. Some parties use specific colors or symbols to show their ideas. This helps voters quickly recognize them on a ballot. Many parties focus on a specific set of rules or beliefs. Common types include liberal, conservative, and socialist parties. Other large groups might follow communism, populism, or nationalism. Some parties act as a "big tent" to attract many different people. They try to bring voters with many different views together.

People have formed political groups for a very long time. Ancient thinkers like Plato and Aristotle wrote about these groups. In the late Roman Republic, there were groups called Populares and Optimates. However, modern political parties mostly emerged around the late 1700s. They first appeared in Europe and the United States of America. The United Kingdom has the Conservative Party, which is very old. The Democratic Party in the United States is also very old.

History shows how these groups changed over the centuries. In the 1700s, Britain had the Whig and Tory factions. The United States developed its first party system in the 1790s. This included the Federalist Party and the Democratic-Republican Party. By the 1900s, socialist parties grew in Europe with trade unions. Many new countries also formed parties during independence movements. For example, the Indian National Congress helped India become independent. The Uganda National Congress was named after that Indian group.

Political parties often grow from divisions already in society. These divisions are sometimes called social cleavages. A party might form around religion or how people work. In democracies, having several parties gives people more choices. Most democracies have many parties competing against each other. In some places, only one party is allowed to rule. This is often called an autocracy. Parties serve as a vital link between the people and the government.
