A politician is a person who helps make rules for a country or a city. They often belong to a political party or hold an elected job in government. These people make important decisions and help shape public policy. Their duties change depending on if they work for a local, state, or national government. Some people hold titles like mayor, governor, or president.

Politicians use their own beliefs and education to guide their choices. They also try to shape what the public thinks about important issues.

To reach people, politicians must be very good at using communication tools. In the 19th century, they used newspapers, magazines, and posters to share messages. During the 20th century, radio and television became much more common. A big change happened during the 1960 Kennedy-Nixon debates in Washington, D.C.

This showed that seeing a person speak was just as important as hearing them. Today, politicians use social media like X, Instagram, and YouTube. These platforms allow them to talk directly to people very quickly.

History shows us many different kinds of political leaders. In ancient Greece, a man named Pericles of Athens was a famous leader.

In the United States, George Washington was a very important politician. He served as the first President and set many examples for others to follow. Some people stay in government until they retire. These are called career politicians. Others use their experience to start new businesses later in life.

Many things can shape who a politician becomes. Their personal history can change their core beliefs and their skills. Things like their race, gender, or education also play a role.

Some politicians even have very good memories for names and faces. For example, Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush were known for this. However, the job has many hard challenges today. Politicians must deal with rumors, misinformation, and even discrimination.

In the past, some politicians used their power in unfair ways. In the 19th century, a "spoils system" was common. This meant politicians gave government jobs to their friends instead of the best workers. To fix this corruption, new rules were created.

These reforms helped ensure that officials worked for the public interest. Now, the goal is for politicians to prioritize the needs of everyone over their own profit.
