A political party is a collective organization that coordinates candidates to compete in elections. These groups aim to participate in governance and use political power to achieve specific goals. Members of a party often share a similar ideology, which is a shared set of beliefs about politics. While some define a party narrowly as just the group of candidates running for office, a broader definition includes the entire apparatus. This includes the official organizations, the volunteers, the voters, and the legislators in government.

To function, political parties rely on a specific organizational structure. Most parties include a party leader who holds primary responsibility for all activities. They also utilize party executives to perform administrative and organizational tasks. These executives may even be responsible for selecting the leader. The wider membership supports the party by volunteering time, donating money, or voting for candidates. In some instances, a party might work closely with affiliated organizations, such as trade unions or youth organizations.

Political parties are categorized by their ideological goals or their methods of attracting voters. Many democratic elections feature liberal, conservative, or socialist parties. Other large movements may follow communism, populism, nationalism, or Islamism. To help voters identify them, parties often adopt specific colors and symbols. However, not all parties are driven by a single ideology. Some act as a "big tent," meaning they try to attract a wide variety of voters with different positions. Others might focus on patronage or the advancement of a specific political entrepreneur.

History shows that while political factions are ancient, modern parties are relatively new. Ancient thinkers like Plato and Aristotle discussed political factions in their writings. The late Roman Republic had factions known as the Populares and the Optimates. However, modern political parties emerged around the end of the 18th century. They first appeared in Europe and the United States of America. The United Kingdom's Conservative Party and the United States' Democratic Party are often called the world's oldest continuous political parties.

In the 18th century, British politics was shaped by the Whig and Tory factions. The Whigs supported a Protestant constitutional monarchy, while the Tories supported a strong monarchy. In the 1790s, the United States developed its First Party System. This included the Federalist Party and the Democratic-Republican Party. By the 19th century, stable party systems appeared in places like Sweden. The 1848 Revolutions in Europe also helped accelerate the spread of the party model. In the 20th century, socialist parties emerged in Europe, often supported by organized trade unions.

Political parties often emerge from social cleavages, which are pre-existing divisions in society. These divisions can be based on religion, social class, or how people work. For example, a party might form around the interests of workers. Political scientists have noted that parties can adjust themselves to match the preferences of voters to remain competitive. This process helps streamline political decision-making by encouraging members to cooperate. In many newly sovereign countries, party systems grew out of independence movements. The Indian National Congress, for instance, helped shape the political landscape of India after independence.

Parties play a vital role in the relationship between a government and its people. They serve as intermediaries, acting as a link between the populace and the state. They also help recruit and train future political leaders. In most democracies, having multiple competitive parties is considered an essential feature. While autocracies may have one dominant party, democracies typically feature several. Even in countries where political parties are strictly regulated by law, they remain a nearly universal phenomenon in modern states.
