society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A police car is a special emergency vehicle. It helps police officers travel quickly during patrols. Officers use these cars to respond to calls for service. They also use them to reach incident scenes fast. Cars can help transport or temporarily detain suspects. Most police cars have special markings called livery. These markings help people recognize them easily.

Police cars use specific tools to stay safe. They often have emergency lights on the roof. These lights are usually red, blue, or both. They also use loud sirens to warn other drivers. This helps them move through traffic quickly. Inside the car, officers carry many helpful items. They have communication devices to talk to headquarters. They also carry weaponry and other emergency equipment.

History shows how these vehicles have changed over time. The first police car was an electric wagon. It belonged to the Akron Police Department in Ohio. This happened in 1899. An officer named Louis Mueller, Sr. drove it. A city engineer named Frank Loomis designed it. It cost US$2,400 and had electric lights and gongs.

Vehicles became necessary as cities and towns grew. After World War II, more people owned cars. This led to more driving on new highways. In the United Kingdom, Captain Athelstan Popkess changed how police worked. He created a "Mechanised Division" in Nottingham. He used two-way radios to talk to cars. This helped police respond to crimes much faster. Modern police work now relies heavily on these vehicles.
