Plutarch's life involved many different roles and duties. He studied math and philosophy in Athens under a teacher named Ammonius. Later, he became a Roman citizen with a new name. His sponsor was a man named Lucius Mestrius Florus. As a citizen, Plutarch held a respected social rank. He also worked as a leader in his own town. Plutarch is best known for his famous books. His most celebrated work is called the Parallel Lives. In these books, he wrote about famous Greeks and Romans. He often paired one Greek leader with one Roman leader. He did not just want to record history. Instead, he wanted to show how a person's character shaped their life. He believed that a person's good or bad traits were very important. He used small stories to show what people were really like.

His writing includes many different types of stories and ideas. He wrote a large collection of essays called the Moralia. These essays cover many subjects, from the moon to how siblings love each other. Some of his essays are even funny or lighthearted. He also wrote a detailed life of Alexander the Great. This book is a main source for what we know about that conqueror. He also wrote about Julius Caesar and the king Pyrrhus. These works help us understand how people thought long ago.

Plutarch's family was also very important to his story. He had a wife named Timoxena and several children. He wrote a sad letter to his wife after their young daughter died. He also lost a young son named Chaeron. Even though he was a busy leader, he cared deeply for his family. His family stayed in Greece for a very long time. Some later writers even said they were related to him. His ideas and books still help us learn about the past today.
