Scientists call this Pikes Peak granite. The pink color comes from a mineral called potassium feldspar. This rock started as hot magma deep under the Earth's surface. It formed about 1.05 billion years ago. Over a long time, the rock pushed upward to form a dome. Then, wind and water washed away the soil and softer rocks. This left the hard granite peak we see today.

Many different people have named this mountain throughout history. The Ute people called it Tava-Kaavi, which means "Sun Mountain."

The Arapaho people called it "Long Mountain." In 1806, an explorer named Zebulon Pike visited the area. He tried to climb it in the winter but could not. He found the snow was very deep and it was too cold. Later, a man named Edwin James made the first successful climb in 1820. He was a scientist who studied plants and rocks.

History has brought many people to the mountain. During a gold rush, people used the name "Pike's Peak" in newspapers.
