He studied math, nature, and how life works. He led a trip to a cold place called Lapland. He wanted to find the true shape of the Earth. Some thought the Earth was long like a football.

Others thought it was flat like a squashed ball.

Maupertuis measured the Earth and proved it was squashed.

He also found a big rule in math. This is called the principle of least action. It says that nature follows paths that use the least amount of action. He used this idea to explain how light moves.

Maupertuis even studied how living things grow. He thought parents pass traits to their children. This was a very early idea about genetics. Genetics is the study of how traits pass down. He also thought that life might change over time. This helped lead to new ideas about how species develop.
