Johann Heinrich Lambert was a man of many talents.

He was born in 1728 in Mulhouse. He worked many jobs as a young man. He was a tailor's helper and a clerk. Later, he became a teacher. He moved to Berlin to work at a science academy.

Lambert did great work in math. He was the first to prove that pi is irrational. This means pi cannot be written as a simple fraction. He also studied shapes on curved surfaces. He found that triangles on a saddle shape have small angles.

He also helped us make maps. He studied how to show a round Earth on a flat map. Lambert looked at light and color, too. He even made a pyramid to show different colors. In space, he thought about how stars move in groups. His ideas helped people understand the solar system. Today, an asteroid is named after him. His work in light is also why we use the name "lambert" for brightness.
